A Mission Beyond Politics: The Role of the National Movement for a Just Society in Nation-Building

Karu’s Unwavering Struggle for Democracy, Good Governance, and an Ethical State

(Sujith Mangala De Silva)

The National Movement for a Just Society, led by Karu Jayasuriya, represents a quiet yet profound socio-democratic revolution taking place in Sri Lanka. Throughout Sri Lanka’s political history, there have been numerous struggles to capture political power, as well as efforts to use that power to transform society. However, movements dedicated to transforming society, empowering citizens, and cultivating a culture of good governance without seeking political power are exceedingly rare.

In this context, the National Movement for a Just Society, under the leadership of Karu Jayasuriya, has earned a distinctive place within Sri Lanka’s civil society landscape. The movement is not merely a political organization. Rather, it is a national intellectual and policy-oriented platform dedicated to advancing social, political, economic, legal, and cultural reforms. Its primary objective is to foster national consensus by bringing together representatives from diverse political parties, religious leaders, professionals, academics, youth leaders, and civil society activists onto a common platform.

Championing Democracy and Constitutional Governance

For many years, the National Movement for a Just Society has consistently advocated for the strengthening of democratic institutions in Sri Lanka. The movement has actively defended the fundamental principles of democracy, including the rule of law, judicial independence, media freedom, human rights, and the devolution of power.

During periods of political turmoil, constitutional crises, and challenges to the independence of state institutions, the movement has played an important role in drawing national attention to these issues and safeguarding democratic governance.

Advocating Ethical Politics

Public confidence in Sri Lankan politics has been undermined by corruption, fraud, nepotism, and the abuse of power. The National Movement for a Just Society has repeatedly emphasized that restoring ethical foundations to politics is essential for rebuilding public trust.

Under Karu Jayasuriya’s leadership, the movement has successfully promoted the view that political power should be exercised in service of the people and that governance must be founded upon accountability, transparency, and the public good.

Economic Reform and Social Justice

The movement emphasizes that economic development should not be measured solely by statistical growth. Genuine development, it argues, must improve the quality of life of citizens, reduce poverty, create opportunities for younger generations, and ensure social justice.

The movement has consistently highlighted that economic policymaking should be guided by national interests rather than short-term political gains. It has also advocated for the efficient use of public resources and the reduction of the debt burden passed on to future generations.

Promoting National Unity and Reconciliation

As a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural nation, Sri Lanka’s long-term stability depends on national unity. The movement firmly believes that all citizens should enjoy equal dignity and respect regardless of ethnicity, religion, or language. To achieve this vision, the movement continuously advocates for a process of national reconciliation founded upon dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect among all communities.

Cultural and Moral Renewal

A nation’s progress cannot be measured solely through economic indicators. The preservation of moral values, civic responsibility, mutual respect, and cultural heritage is equally important. The National Movement for a Just Society has implemented various initiatives aimed at nurturing civic responsibility, leadership skills, and democratic values among young people. Through these efforts, it seeks to cultivate a responsible civic culture for future generations.

Conclusion

Political discourse in Sri Lanka often revolves around elections, political parties, and individual leaders. Yet the long-term progress of a nation depends upon strong institutions, a democratic culture, the rule of law, and social justice.

By protecting and promoting these values, the National Movement for a Just Society has emerged as an important force within Sri Lanka’s civil society. Under the leadership of Karu Jayasuriya, the movement’s mission extends far beyond the pursuit of political power. It represents a long-term national project aimed at building a better-governed state, a responsible citizenry, and a more just society.

Accordingly, the National Movement for a Just Society can be viewed as a quiet yet powerful social revolution—one that continues to make a meaningful contribution to Sri Lanka’s democratic future and national transformation.
